On November 10, 2020 Clayton (Walker) Wright tragically lost his battle against depression. One of the things that Clay loved most in life was lacrosse, and he was one of the most talented players to come through the Verona Lacrosse Program. Clay's first time picking up a lacrosse stick was at tryouts Freshman year (2009) and he immediately fell in love with the sport. In his 4 years he was a part of one semifinal appearance and runner-up state championship. He was a Second Team All-Conference defenseman in 2012 and 2013 and captain of the 2013 team. On the field Clay was known for his fierce competitive spirit and his incredible work ethic. He was a high intensity player, dedicated to his craft and put 100% of his heart into anything that challenged him. Off the field Clay was the guy everyone loved to be around. He loved his family and friends, and making people laugh. He also loved anything outdoors especially a campfire, fishing, hunting, hanging at the lake and just enjoying the beauty of nature. Clay had a huge heart, always there for others and was also always up for a good time. He had a work ethic unlike any other and truly lived by the moto work hard, play hard. In memory of Clay and his love for the game, we have created the Clay (Walker) Wright Memorial Scholarship, which will be used to cover all the costs (except equipment) for two players every year.

Scholarship Details:

  • Funding: We expect the scholarship to be funded by independent donations from family and friends of Clay, as well as being fundraised through an annual alumni game. The money will be held and distributed by the Verona Lacrosse Club treasurer in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this proposal.

  • Amount: While the amount of money may vary based on the yearly costs for participation in the program, the expectation is that the full cost of team fees, players packs, travel expenses, and any other necessary expenses for playing Verona Lacrosse will be covered in their entirety by the scholarship.

  • Mentorship: In addition to the financial aid, Walker Scholars will have access to a group that includes previous scholars and founding members of the scholarship. This group will be readily available to provide guidance on things like applying to college, applying to jobs, and recruitment for college athletics.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Age: The coaching staff of Verona lacrosse will be tasked with choosing two players every year to be the recipients of the scholarship. Priority will be given to high school age players however, if there is not a need at the high school level this scholarship can be awarded to any youth lacrosse player.

  • Academics: The only academic standard for the scholarship is to maintain the minimum GPA necessary to participate in athletics at Verona

  • Financial Need: To be considered for the scholarship, a player must demonstrate some amount of financial need.

Selection Criteria:

To be considered for the scholarship, in addition to meeting the eligibility requirements, players will be selected based on the intangible attributes that made Clay such an outstanding player. These include, but are not limited to: passion and love for the game, intensity in both practice and games, outstanding leadership qualities, strong competitive spirit, always looking out for teammates, and an unrelenting desire to improve.
